エジプトで成長中の医療マッチングスタートアップ“Elbalto”とは？

今回紹介するのはエジプトで医療マッチングプラットフォームサービスを提供する“Elbalto”である。” We Care To Make Your Life Easier” を掲げる Elbaltoの事業概要は、携帯電話を活用した医師と患者のマッチングサービスで、収益モデルはその仲介手数料を得る(図１) というものだ。現在アプリケーションはエジプトを中心に35,000ダウンロードされている。

前回の記事で「貧困層を巻き込んだビジネス」は難しく、そういった理念を掲げるのであれば粗い粒度のポートフォリオで全体最適を考える必要があると述べた。

本日はまた違った視点から「貧困層を巻き込んだビジネス」を捉えていく。
ポイントは貧困層の困りごとを解決するために「限りある資源をいかに効用最大化できるか」だ。

彼らは医療に特に困っている郊外の人々に焦点を当てている。郊外の人々は医療機関(病院や薬局など)へのアクセス手段が乏しい為、Elbaltoはほぼすべての人が持っている携帯電話(*1)のアプリケーションの中身を充実させてきた。

まずユーザーインターフェースは以下の写真のように誰もが使用しやすいようにとてもシンプルな作りになっている。医師の概要や評価も簡単に見ることができる。

そして内容も充実しており、
例えば、レントゲン画像が必要な際には一度病院で撮影しておけばその画像をElbalto上で送付すれば、その画像に基づいた診断を受けることができる。

さらに薬局とも提携し始めており、診療の直後にアプリ上で医薬品を購入して配送してもらうというサービスも開始した。交通インフラ等が整ってくれば、これらのサービスを郊外の人々が使用できるようになるため、彼らがインタビュー中に語った”You can get a hospital at your house”が実現する未来はそう遠くないかもしれない。

このようにElbaltoは携帯電話やネットワークという郊外でも誰もが持つインフラを利用し、その中に最大限の技術やサービスを組み込むことで貧困層を巻き込んだビジネスを行おうとしている。ケニアのMpesaや前回ご紹介したHaranなど多くの企業が携帯電話を利用したプラットフォームビジネスで貧困層にサービスを提供している。ただElbaltoはターゲットである郊外の (貧困層を多く含む) 人々の状況をよく理解したうえでより適切な手段を用いてサービスを提供していると感じる。

貧困層を巻き込んだビジネスでは、顧客が持つものやお金、知識等が中間・富裕層よりも乏しいことを正しく理解して適切なビジネスモデルを取り入れていかなければならない。

-What is Elbalto, a growing medical matching startup in Egypt?-

In a last article, “business involving the poverty” is difficult, and if you have such a philosophy, a coarse-grained portfolio must be considered for overall optimization. This time, we will look at “business involving the poverty” from a different perspective. The point is “how to maximize the utility of limited resources” in order to solve the problems of the target.

The company we Introduce is Elbalto, a medical matching platform service in Egypt. Elbalto’s business outline, which states “We Care To Make Your Life Easier,” is a physician-patient matching service using mobile phones. The revenue model is to earn brokerage commissions (*1). Currently the application has been downloaded 35,000 mainly in Egypt.

It focuses on suburban people who are particularly trouble with health care. Because suburban people have limited access to medical institutions (hospitals, pharmacies, etc.), Elbalto has enriched the mobile phone application that almost everyone has.

First, the user interface is very simple, making it easy for everyone to use.

The contents are also substantial. For example, when an X-ray image is required, it can be taken once at a hospital, and if the image is sent on Elbalto, a diagnosis based on the image can be received. In addition, it has begun to partner with pharmacies, and has launched a service to purchase and deliver medicines immediately after consultation. Once the transportation infrastructure is in place, these services will be available to suburban people, so the future that “You can get a hospital at your house” they mentioned during the interview may not be far away.

In this way, Elbalto is trying to run a business involving the poverty by using the infrastructure such as mobile phones and networks everyone in the suburbs has, which it incorporates the maximum technology and services into. Many companies, such as Kenya’s Mpesa and Haran mentioned earlier, are providing services to the poverty through mobile phone-based platform businesses. However, I feel that Elbalto provides services using more appropriate means after understanding the target situation well.

In a business involving the poverty, it is necessary to correctly understand that customers have less things, less money, less knowledge, etc. than the middle and rich, and to adopt an appropriate business model.
